We are a group of Herrin history aficionados, exploring local historical people, places, and events, sharing our discoveries with the public, and preserving the information we find.
Herrin, though one of the younger towns in southern Illinois, has a controversial and storied history. With the discovery of rich coal fields in the area, Herrin exploded into existence at the dawn of the twentieth century. Businesses, banks, railroads, coal mines, schools, and churches all thrived and brought Herrin’s population to nearly 7,000 by 1910. Fueled by the prosperity of the burgeoning coal industry, other nearby communities sprang to life including Fordville (now Energy), Colp, Chittyville, and Ferges, among others.
While the coal that brought life to the area has flamed out, Herrin demonstrates a defiant sense of community pride. Without a voice, the past can be lost. It is the mission of the Herrin Area Historial Society to provide a voice for past residents and their accomplishments.
Join Us in a forging a vision for the future and the past.
